About

Founded in 1968 by Wilf and Marie Stevens, W & ME Stevens began making spectacles for local opticians from their attic in Forest Hall.

Their children, David and Christine, both qualified Dispensing Opticians, joined the business in the 1980s. Stevens Opticians opened its first practice in Heaton in 1986, followed by Westerhope in 1988 and Killingworth in 1992.

Today, Christine and David run practices in Killingworth and Whitley Bay, maintaining the same high standards of personal and professional eyecare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need an eye test?

An eye test is a necessary regular health check. Eye and vision problems may not show obvious symptoms.

Early diagnosis and treatment are important to maintain a good level of vision and prevent sight loss.

A full eye examination can also detect other underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

It is also important to check that your vision meets certain driving or occupational requirements.

How often do I need my eyes tested?

It is usually recommended to have a sight test every 2 years, even if you aren't having any problems.

An eye test will check if there are any changes in your vision, as well as detect underlying medical conditions.

You may need a test more frequently depending on your age and medical history, as advised by your Optometrist.

Do I need to pay for my eye test?

Some people are eligible for free sight tests under the NHS. Alternatively, private charges will apply.

Please follow the NHS link to see if you are eligible: http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcosts/Pages/Eyecarecosts.aspx

How long does an eye test take?

A sight test usually takes around 20-30 minutes. This may become longer if further examination is needed, such as field tests or fundus photography.

How old should my child be to have an eye test?

Children can have sight tests at any age.

It is recommended to have a first test around the age of 3. It's best to have a test before starting school or learning to read.

Children's eyes become fully developed by around age 8 so early detection of sight problems is important for successful treatment.

Do I need a sight test as well as my diabetic screening?

It is very important to have a full eye examination as this covers more than your diabetic screening.

Your Optometrist will look for signs of other conditions, such as glaucoma or cataracts.

Even if you don't feel your vision has changed, your Optometrist may detect changes to the blood vessels in your eye (Diabetic Retinopathy).

Early detection makes it more likely that you will maintain a good level of vision and prevent permanent sight loss. If you are diabetic, your sight test is also covered on the NHS.
